8th Grade: Paragraph Chunking tips

A topic sentence contains a subject and an opinion (also called commentary).

Concrete details are facts, direct quotes, examples, and plot references.
  • Transitions
    • For example...
    • For instance...
    • To illustrate...
    • Namely...
Commentary
  • thoughts, analysis, opinions, observations, insights, reflections, reactions, etc.
  • Begin your commentary sentences with signal phrases like these.
    • This shows that...
    • This proves that...
    • This illustrates...
    • This indicates...
  • For your secondary commentary sentences, use these phrases.
    • This also shows that...
    • This also proves that...
    • This is significant because...
    • This is important because...
    • This is because...
    • This is interesting/telling because...
  • Concluding sentence transitions
    •  All in all...
    • Therefore it is evident that...
    • As a result...
    • With that in mind...
    • In conclusion...
    • As one can see...
